One Year, 150 Ceremonies: Beyond Minimalism
Updated: Oct 24
We Didn't Set Out to Create Another Wedding Venue
When we first imagined The Ensora, our intention was never simply to open another micro wedding venue in Vancouver.
Through Vancity Officiant, we had spent years officiating weddings across Greater Vancouver and British Columbia. We had seen intimate legal signings, elaborate celebrations, and highly customized ceremonies. We valued those experiences, and we still do.
But that experience led us to a different question: what if, instead of designing every ceremony around an individual couple's vision, we brought everything we had learned into one carefully defined experience?
Not because customization was unnecessary or smaller weddings were better. We simply believed there was room for another approach. That idea became The Ensora.
From Experience to Refinement
A customized wedding ceremony usually begins with the couple. Their traditions, preferences, and vision guide how the ceremony takes shape. The Ensora approaches service design from the other direction.
We started with years of professional experience and refined the elements within our control: the ceremony space, ceremony structure, booking process, and consistent professional service. Rather than promising endless customization, we established an experience that couples could clearly understand and choose.
Simplicity was the result of that refinement, not the reason behind it.
We were not removing elements merely to have fewer. We were deciding deliberately what to provide and how to provide it well. Customized ceremonies through Vancity Officiant remain important to us. The Ensora is a different application of the same professional experience.
What Is The Ensora?
The Ensora is an officiant-led marriage ceremony space in Richmond, British Columbia, serving couples across Greater Vancouver. It offers two defined ceremony experiences: the Legal Signing Ceremony and The Ensora Celebration.
The dedicated space, ceremony structure, and online booking process are designed to provide a clear, professional way to get married. Rather than rebuilding the service around every individual request, we offer an established experience that couples can choose for their own reasons.
A Defined Experience, an Open Purpose
Although our service was carefully defined, we deliberately chose not to define why couples should choose it. Marriage has different meanings for different people.
Some value the legal recognition of a relationship. Some want privacy. Some want to share the occasion with a small circle of family. Others choose to complete their legal marriage now and celebrate on another day. We do not believe one purpose is inherently more meaningful than another.
Throughout our first year, we kept our doors open to these different purposes, not to endlessly different service designs. We wanted to see the range of reasons that could fit within the same refined experience.
Refinement defines what The Ensora provides. Inclusivity respects why each couple chooses it.
One Year. 150+ Completed Ceremonies.
October 22, 2026 marked The Ensora's first anniversary. By October 24, 2026, at least 150 marriage ceremonies had been completed at The Ensora in Richmond, BC. This count refers to ceremonies already held, not future bookings.
For us, the milestone matters because it is a real record of people choosing a service model that began as an idea. Our earlier reflection, One Hundred Marriages Before Our First Anniversary, captured an earlier stage of that journey.
Across these ceremonies we welcomed different circumstances, priorities, and expectations. What remained consistent was the service we provided. What differed was the purpose and meaning each couple brought to it.
Those real experiences helped establish proof of concept: couples were choosing the same deliberately defined service for genuinely different reasons. They also helped us understand better what we had created.
Beyond Minimalism
The Ensora is intentionally simple in appearance and process. It may be described as a minimalist micro wedding venue, but minimalism alone does not explain its foundation.
We have never believed that less is always more. A large, elaborate wedding can be every bit as meaningful as a simple legal signing. The scale or complexity of a celebration does not dictate what marriage means to the people involved.
Our approach was never about proving one wedding format better than another. It was about drawing on experience to define a service precisely, without prescribing why people should choose it.
We refined the experience, not the possibilities.
That is what Beyond Minimalism means to us: refinement in what we provide, and inclusivity toward the different purposes couples bring to it.
What Comes After the First Year?
The Ensora began with professional experience and a belief that this focused approach deserved to exist. At least 150 completed ceremonies later, it has become a working service model shaped further by the people who chose it.
We are grateful to every couple who trusted us with their marriage. The first year has given us something stronger than a concept: genuine experience, a clearer understanding, and more to learn.
