One Space, Different Purposes for Marriage

A Different Starting Point

Traditional wedding planning often begins with a couple's vision of their wedding day. The venue, ceremony, celebration, and various details are brought together to create the experience they have imagined.

At The Ensora, we began from a different starting point.

We placed the marriage ceremony at the centre of the experience.

Drawing on years of professional officiating experience through Vancity Officiant, we developed a carefully defined approach to marriage ceremonies, from the physical space and ceremony structure to the booking process and professional service.

Rather than designing a different ceremony experience around every couple's individual vision, we established a consistent experience that couples could choose for their own reasons.

As The Ensora marked its first anniversary in October 2026, we had completed more than 150 marriage ceremonies in Richmond, British Columbia. Through those experiences, we observed something important.

When the experience remains consistent, the reasons couples choose it can be remarkably different.

Some couples wanted privacy. Some wanted to share the moment with their closest family members. Others were preparing for a destination wedding, while some simply wanted to complete their legal marriage.

When Privacy Is the Priority

For some couples, getting married is a personal decision they prefer to keep private. They may not want to announce their marriage yet, involve family members, or organize a gathering around the occasion. Others simply prefer a private legal ceremony without making it part of a larger social event.

Privacy does not necessarily mean that the occasion carries a particular emotional significance. Every couple approaches marriage differently. Some consider the moment deeply personal. Others are primarily concerned with completing the legal process. We believe both reasons deserve equal respect.

Can you get legally married in BC without inviting friends or family?

Yes. British Columbia requires two witnesses to be present at a legal marriage ceremony, but those witnesses do not need to be friends or family members.

At The Ensora, couples who prefer not to bring their own witnesses can request witness arrangements as an additional service. This means a couple can choose a private ceremony without inviting personal guests solely to satisfy the legal witness requirement.

However, a legal marriage in BC cannot take place with only the couple and the officiant. Two witnesses are still required.

We explore this question in our guide to marriage witnesses in British Columbia.

Getting Legally Married Now, Celebrating Later

Marriage and wedding celebrations are often planned as parts of the same occasion. But they do not necessarily need to happen together.

Some couples choose to complete their legal marriage first, then hold a celebration with family and friends at another time. Their reasons vary. They may be working around family schedules, planning a future wedding, or simply preferring to organize the legal and celebratory aspects of marriage separately.

In these situations, a legal signing ceremony is not necessarily intended to replace a wedding. It serves a specific purpose within a larger plan.

Through our work with Vancity Officiant, we continue to appreciate and conduct traditional, fully customized wedding ceremonies.

Marriage and celebration can be connected without having to take place on the same day.

Legally Married in BC, Celebrating Somewhere Else

Destination weddings offer another example of why some couples choose to separate their legal marriage from their celebration. Some couples planning a wedding overseas prefer to complete their legal marriage in British Columbia before travelling.

This allows them to organize their destination celebration separately from the legal requirements of getting married in another country. At The Ensora, we have welcomed couples choosing a legal signing ceremony as part of their destination wedding plans.

Can you get legally married in BC and have your wedding overseas?

Yes. Eligible couples can complete a legal marriage in British Columbia and later hold a symbolic wedding ceremony or celebration in another country.

To get legally married in BC, couples generally need a valid BC Marriage Licence, an authorized marriage officiant, and two witnesses. A BC Marriage Licence is valid for three months, and there is no mandatory waiting period after it is issued.

Couples should confirm whether their overseas ceremony will be symbolic or whether they intend to complete additional legal steps abroad, as requirements vary by country. For the local process, see our guide to getting married in British Columbia.

How can a BC Marriage Certificate be used in another country?

After the marriage is registered, couples can obtain an official BC Marriage Certificate. When the certificate needs to be presented to an overseas government or institution, additional authentication may be required.

British Columbia's Document Authentication Program handles eligible documents intended for use internationally. Since January 11, 2024, Canada has participated in the Hague Apostille Convention.

An apostille authenticates the origin of a document. It does not independently guarantee that a marriage will be recognized for every purpose abroad. Couples should confirm requirements with the receiving overseas authority.

Sharing the Moment With a Small Circle

Not every couple choosing an intimate ceremony is looking for privacy. Some specifically want to share the occasion with a few important people, such as their parents, children, or closest friends.

Some consider this their complete wedding celebration. Others see it as one part of a larger wedding journey. The reasons are personal, even when the guest list is similar.

The Legal Signing Ceremony offers a 30-minute format with defined guest limits and available options. The Ensora Celebration provides a one-hour ceremony experience for couples wishing to share the occasion with more guests, within its established capacity.

When Legal Marriage Is the Main Purpose

Not every couple approaches marriage primarily as a celebration. For some, legal recognition is the immediate priority. Their reasons may involve personal circumstances, family considerations, or practical and administrative matters.

We do not always know those reasons, nor do we believe couples need to justify choosing a straightforward legal ceremony.

What do you need to get legally married in British Columbia?

The essential requirements include a valid BC Marriage Licence, an authorized marriage officiant, two witnesses, and completion of the legally required ceremony and documentation.

These requirements apply whether a couple chooses a brief legal signing, an intimate family ceremony, or a larger wedding. Our BC marriage guide explains the process in more detail.

A straightforward legal marriage deserves the same professional care as any other ceremony, even when celebration is not the couple's immediate priority.

Making the Decision Simpler, Not Just the Ceremony

Different couples bring different purposes to The Ensora, but they share one important decision. They need to determine whether our established ceremony experience is right for them.

Traditional wedding planning often involves consultations, proposals, customized quotations, and decisions about how different services will come together. That process can be valuable when creating a customized wedding.

But when the ceremony service is already clearly defined, we believe the decision-making process can work differently.

At The Ensora, our ceremony formats, available options, pricing, and booking process are established in advance. Instead of beginning with an open-ended enquiry, couples can review what is included and decide whether the service meets their needs.

Our goal was not simply to make the ceremony straightforward. It was to make the decision-making process clearer, too.

Can you book a legal marriage ceremony in Richmond, BC, online?

Yes. The Ensora offers direct online booking for its established marriage ceremony packages. Through our ceremony packages and booking page, couples can review the available experiences, compare options, check availability, and book an appropriate date and time.

This does not remove every question a couple may have. Some circumstances still require clarification or additional arrangements. But it allows couples to understand the essential service before making a commitment.

One Experience, Different Choices

The Ensora was not created to become a different type of wedding service for every couple. It offers a clearly defined marriage ceremony experience developed through years of professional officiating work.

Some couples choose it for privacy. Others need a legal marriage before celebrating overseas. Some want a small gathering with family. Others primarily want to complete the legal process.

Our packages have established formats, durations, guest capacities, and available services. Not every request will fit, and being clear about those boundaries is part of providing a professional experience.

A defined experience does not require a defined purpose.

What Different Couples Have Taught Us

As we reflected on more than 150 ceremonies completed around The Ensora's first anniversary, we saw how one refined experience could serve couples with very different reasons for marrying.

Refinement defines what The Ensora provides. Inclusivity respects why each couple chooses it.

Our first-anniversary article, One Year, 150 Ceremonies: Beyond Minimalism, explores the experience and thinking behind this approach.

We cannot define what marriage should mean to everyone. But we can define the service we provide, explain it clearly, and allow couples to decide whether it is right for them.

The Ensora provides the ceremony experience. The reasons for choosing it belong to the couple.
